We live in a time of rapid social change.  High levels of migration in the past decade, changing definitions of gender roles, and changing attitudes toward gays and transgender people.  Some citizens challenge migration as it perhaps lowers wages for semi-skilled workers. Some seem disturbed by changing definitions of gender and sexual identity, believing that such changes go against religious tradition.  
To what degree do you think that such arguments may be accounts offered up in the face of drastic challenges to symbolic universes and in-group- out-group reality?
