The Marriage of Figaro or the The Magic Flute

Opera choices: The Marriage of Figaro or the The Magic Flute (or Don Giovanni, if you’d like to watch the entire opera on your own)

Please select an aria or an ensemble from the opera, and discuss how the music enhances the drama.  Points to consider: how does the music represent the personality of the character, or the emotions expressed, or the situation being enacted?   Do the vocal ranges and singing style match the characters?   Please specify the act, scene, and/or aria.

Additionally, select one of the following options to discuss:

  1. How does the relationship between two central characters (of your choice!) evolve throughout the course of the entire opera?

  1. Compare and contrast two different productions of the same scene (please include the URLs.) What are the differences in the sets, direction, lighting, costumes, acting?  Which do you think is more effective, and why?   Please specify the act, scene, and/or aria.

  1. How is this opera relevant to our lives in the 21st-century? Put another way, why does this opera still resonate with modern audiences?
