Make-Up Assignment for Seminar 3:

Purpose of this Seminar

Falls are a leading cause of hospital-acquired injury, and they are the most common adverse event reported in hospitals (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2016; Center for Disease Control [CDC] (2016). Falls can result in injury to both patients and staff, prolong length of stay, increase cost of care and even result in death. The nurse is the first line of defense in patient fall prevention. The content of this portion of the Nurse Residency Program is designed to build on the nurse’s baseline knowledge and skills in assessing patient risk for falling, identifying evidence-based interventions to prevent falls and to provide a basic understanding of quality improvement data related to falls.

Nurses play a pivotal role in the prevention and early recognition of infections, as well as in controlling their transmission. These functions are essential for achieving positive patient outcomes. Nurses actively intervene to prevent infection by performing evidence-based handwashing techniques, using aseptic techniques, exercising vigilance in detecting the early warning signs of infection, and rapidly intervening to interrupt the transmission of infection. The residency program builds on the resident’s knowledge of evidence-based infection prevention and control practices, with a focus on prevention, early recognition and preventing the transmission of organisms.

Seminar Outcomes

By the end of today’s learning event, each Nurse Resident will be able to:

  1. Assess patient fall risk factors using an evidence-based assessment and risk rating tool
  2. Implement evidence-based interventions to prevent patient falls effectively manage clinical and systems issues to prevent patient falls
  3. Understand the importance of complying with the principles of asepsis as well as with the institution’s infection prevention and control policies, procedures and surveillance programs.
  4. Identify resources within the institution that are available to facilitate an inter-professional, collaborative approach to infection prevention and control.
  5. Utilize strategies to evaluate the outcomes of infection prevention and control, including institutional and unit data on health care-associated infection rates.
