BIOL 350 GROUP ARTICLE PRESENTATION RUBRIC
Group Presentations
Create a PowerPoint presentation based on an original research article related to the course book
chapter that you selected. Please send the article to Dr. Finkbeiner for approval by the Friday the
week before your presentation. Prepare your presentation to be at least 12 minutes long, but no
longer than 15 minutes. Everyone in each group is expected to contribute equally to the
presentation during slide preparation and the oral presentation in class.
Criteria for presentations (Total 60 pts):
1. Title slide (2 pts)
a) title of research article that you are presenting
b) names of authors of the research article
c) names of presenters
2. Introduction slides (10 pts)
a) provides an overview of the general topic with background information, this can
follow the introduction in the research article
b) includes at least one slide or statement about how the article is relevant to the book
chapter
c) adequately introduces the question or hypothesis addressed in the research article
d) includes at least one additional reference other than your original article
3. Materials and Methods slides (10 pts)
a) describes the experimental/observational/modeling approach used in the article
b) the materials and methods are communicated clearly
c) includes proper controls and replications (if any)
d) adequately describes sampling procedures
e) adequately describes data analysis procedures
4. Results slide(s) (10 pts)
a) clearly presents results in tables and figures relevant to question (you can use the
figures from the article itself)
b) includes any test statistics and pvalues reported in article
5. Discussion slides (10 pts)
a) results are properly addressed and interpreted
b) integrates results found in the article with those of previous studies, citing other
literature where necessary
c) original question or hypothesis is answered
d) at least one slide or comment circling back to the overall chapter theme
6. Literature Cited this should be its own presentation slide (3 pts)
a) literature cited is relevant to the topic
b) contains a minimum of 3 primary references, including the main presentation article
c) citations are in proper format
7. Appearance (10 pts)
a) presentation is visually appealing and includes images and photos
b) text is free of spelling & grammatical errors (remember to italicize scientific names)
c) text is large enough
d) text is not overbearing (you do not want your slide space to be mostly text)
e) uses proper and consistent format for the literature cited
8. Oral Presentation (5 pts)
a) all group members play an active role in the oral presentation
b) presenters display an understanding of the general topic, hypotheses tested,
methods used, results presented, and conclusions
c) presenters satisfactorily answer questions (if any) about the article
d) presentation was no longer than 15 minutes
