Candidates choose a specific topic to research that lies within one of the large categorical programs in K-12 education. These programs include: 1) special education, 2) English Language Learners, 3) students being served under Section 504, and 4) gifted/talented programs. Candidates write a research paper about a topic within one categorical program that includes: 1) rights and responsibilities of stakeholders, 2) laws that inform categorical programs (e.g., IDEA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, etc.) 3) professional and collaborative procedures for inclusion of students in categorical programs, and 4) implications for candidates in their special or general education classrooms. The instructor will approve the selected topic within a categorical program for the paper.
