 Case Study 9

Marie Valentino is an active 3 year old child who was hospitalized for the past 2 days following a severe asthma attack.  Prior to this hospitalization she was a happy and healthy child with no known medical issues.  Her parents were with Marie when she had the attack in the middle of the night.  They are very scared and anxious that this could happen again.

The physician discussed the diagnosis with the Valentino’s and ordered Marie to be on a bronchodilator “rescue inhaler” as needed.  She is going to be discharged later today.

The Valentino’s and Marie have many questions and need ++ teaching about asthma, signs and symptoms, when to use the inhaler, how to use the inhaler, how to tell if they should bring Marie to the hospital etc.  You are working with Marie today.

intellectual humility

In the lab for this week, we learned about hypothesis testing, which is a key part of the scientific method. To test a hypothesis, we sample data from the population of interest, analyze those data, and then make inferences about the population. Hypothesis testing is based on probability. If we determine that the null hypothesis is probably false, we reject it and move forward based on that assumption. However, we understand that we could still be wrong. This ever-present possibility is a basic limitation of the scientific method. We must remain open-minded to additional evidence that could confirm or disconfirm our existing assumptions. This is why we do not say that a study “proved” this or that. Instead, we say that the results of the study “suggest” or “indicate” this or that. Each study contributes a little bit to the overall body of scientific knowledge (called “the literature”). And the p-values and effect sizes of each study must be carefully reported so that the scientific community can carefully weigh the strength of our conclusions.

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 13:12. What are the limitations we face when interpreting the Bible? How are these limitations similar or different to the limitations of scientific interpretation?

  1. How would you define “intellectual humility?” Have you ever known anyone who had a very high level of intellectual humility? What about a very low level of intellectual humility? How did this character trait impact their work and interactions with others?

  1. How would you rate your own level of intellectual humility? What does it mean to be intellectually humble as a student? As a researcher? As a Christian? What can you do to increase your intellectual humility?

The framers of the Constitution created Congress as the cornerstone of the new nation. Congress is made up of elected officials, called legislators, who represent the people who voted them into office. Legislators’ primary role is to create the laws that will govern the country. To create a law, a bill must be introduced to a legislative body, such as Congress at the national level, the state legislature at the state level, or perhaps a city council at the local level.

Imagine that you are a representative or that you are going to write to your representative with an idea for a bill.

What issue would your bill address?
At what level of government (federal, state, or local) would you introduce this bill? Why would you introduce it at that level?

THIRD WAVE OF FEMINISM (Has the third wave been successful yet?)

By the 1990s, women were enjoying the benefits of higher education and entrance into the corporate world, working as doctors, lawyers, professors and politicians, as well as competing in most major sports. However, for the majority of working women in the United States, their pay scale for the same work done by a male was significantly lower than their male counterparts. Furthermore, the feminist movement had been thwarted, criticized and held back enough that females had to endure sexual harassment, physical and mental abuse, and received less credit and fame as male actors and athletes. Use the contents of this course as a guide: the documents in the course and textbook, Power Points, and especially my Power Point later in the semester, plus the work of leading journalists, sociologists and women’s historians to report on the final efforts at achieving full equality and “protection under the law.” This, as well as everyone’s civil rights, should have been protected and insured from the founding of this country. Has the third wave been successful yet?

Paper length and requirements: This paper should be at least 6 pages in length, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, and based upon at least four academic sources. This means do not base the report upon biography.com, Wikipedia, about.com, or any other “quick answer” online sources. Go to the library online, use primary documents from the textbook, and read academic sources, whether they are my reserve books, academic journaawzls or other historic works.
