This week’s topics were “When More is Not Enough” and “Are We All Artists Now?” In different ways, both readings and lectures talked about how we express our creativity in everyday activities. For many people, buying things is a form of self-expression as they choose clothing, music, decorative items and other things reflecting their likes. Posting on Instagram or even Reddit provides yet another way of expressing oneself. But how much of what we chose or say is influenced by external forces like media, advertising, social norms, and other people? Do you agree with the idea that consumer behavior and social networking can be considered creative? Or are they really systems that manipulate us with artificial boosts to our sense of self?
Students need to reply to one peer.
