✅ ASSESSMENT: Elder Abuse Discussion and Frontline Documentary (53 minutes)1111 unread replies.1111 replies.NOTE:  This discussion includes watching a 53 minute documentary and doing some library research.
For this discussion, we’ll be examining elder abuse.  As the World Health Organization’s website reads, “Elder abuse is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. This type of violence constitutes a violation of human rights and includes physical, sexual, psychological, and emotional abuse; financial and material abuse; abandonment; neglect; and serious loss of dignity and respect.”
Key factsAround 1 in 6 people 60 years and older experienced some form of abuse in community settings during the past year.
Rates of elder abuse are high in institutions such as nursing homes and long-term care facilities, with 2 in 3 staff reporting that they have committed abuse in the past year.
Elder abuse can lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences.
Elder abuse is predicted to increase as many countries are experiencing rapidly ageing populations.
The global population of people aged 60 years and older will more than double, from 900 million in 2015 to about 2 billion in 2050.

For this discussion, you’ll need to do a couple of things before you write your posts.
1) Please watch the following documentary:  Life and Death in Assisted Living, PBS, Frontline (Links to an external site.).
2) Do some research about elder abuse.  Find some information from recent reputable news sources about this topic.  For information about finding reputable sources online, go to this UC Merced Library page (Links to an external site.).
After reading watching the documentary and reading about the topic of elder abuse, please answer the following questions:
1)  What are some of the risk factors for elder abuse? (Name at least 4)  Where is it most prevalent (in private homes or in assisted living or in nursing homes)?  What is the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?
2)  Please describe an intervention program you found with your research.  Describe it and site the source. Is the intervention program in the US or somewhere else?  Is it aimed at in home care, assisted living, or nursing home care?  How is it implemented?  What is the cost?  Then discuss why you chose this program and how you could see it being helpful to curb elder abuse
